3 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
5 eggs
1 c. buttermilk or 1 c. milk and 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Grease and flour a tube pan or a Bundt pan (if a Bundt pan is used, use excess batter to make 6 muffins).
Sift flour, salt and sugar together; cream into shortening, adding eggs, one at a time. Stir in buttermilk, mixing well.
Dissolve baking soda in the boiling water and add, with vanilla, to the batter, mixing well. Pour into baking pan and bake at 320\u00b0 for approximately 1 hour. Cake should spring back to the touch when done.
