Ingredients

2 c. rolled oats
1 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. hot water
1/2 c. shortening, melted and cooled
1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Combine all dry ingredients, except soda.
Combine soda with hot water; stir into oat mixture along with shortening and vanilla.
Roll into balls the size of a walnut.
Place on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to stand on cookie sheets for 2 minutes before removing to wire rack.
