Queen Elizabeth Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/4 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 egg, beaten
    1 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 c. dates, cut in thirds
    1 small tsp. soda
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. boiling water
Preparation
    Cut dates; sprinkle with baking soda and pour boiling water over that.
    Let stand until cool.
    Mix other ingredients and add fruit mixture last.
    Bake in moderate oven (300\u00b0 to 350\u00b0) for 35 to 40 minutes.
