Chana Dal - cooking recipe

1 c. chana dal (yellow split peas)
3 c. cold water
1 tsp. turmeric
2 tsp. ground coriander
1 tsp. finely chopped ginger
1 bay leaf
2 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 whole black peppercorns
1-inch piece cinnamon stick
1 cardamom pod
juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp. fenugreek
1 tsp. cumin seed
1 tsp. mustard seed
