Hamburger Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. ground chuck
    1 c. diced onion
    1 c. cubed raw potatoes
    1 c. sliced carrots
    1/2 c. diced celery
    1 c. shredded cabbage
    1/4 c. rice
    1 small bay leaf
    1/2 tsp. thyme
    1 leaf basil
    4 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    1 1/2 qt. water*
    2 c. cooked tomatoes
Preparation
    *Five cans of beef broth can be substituted for water and eliminate salt.
