7-Layer Tossed Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 head lettuce, torn
    1/2 c. red pepper, chopped
    1/2 c. green pepper, chopped
    1/2 c. yellow pepper, chopped
    1 c. chopped celery
    1/2 c. sweet or green onion, chopped
    1 small can water chestnuts, sliced
    1 pkg. frozen English peas
    2 c. mayonnaise or fat-free mayonnaise
    2 Tbsp. sugar or equivalent substitute
    8 oz. Cheddar cheese, shredded
Preparation
    Layer ingredients except the cheese in the order shown in a bowl large enough to toss ingredients later.
    Spread with mayonnaise and sugar.
    Refrigerate overnight and before serving, sprinkle with cheese.
    Toss just before serving.
