French Onion Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 or 5 large yellow onions
    3 Tbsp. margarine
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
    3 cans beef broth, undiluted
    1 c. grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese
    3 c. water
    1 bay leaf
    6 or 8 slices French bread
    2 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese
Preparation
    Peel and thinly slice onions.
    In 2-quart saucepan on medium heat, melt butter, add onions and pepper.
    Saute onion mixture until golden brown.
    Sprinkle with flour, stirring until flour disappears. remove from heat, add beef broth, stirring constantly. Return to heat and bring to boil.
    Reduce heat to low and cook, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
    Discard bay leaf.
    Taste.
    Add salt and pepper if needed.
    Toast bread.
    Put soup into individual dishes; arrange toast on top of soup, sprinkle liberally with Parmesan cheese and grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese.
    Place bowls 6 inches from heat, in preheated oven at 425\u00b0, until cheese turns golden brown.
    Serve.
    Will serve 6. Can be made ahead of time.
