Ingredients

1 c. butter and lard
4 c. brown sugar
black walnuts
4 eggs
7 c. sifted flour
1 Tbsp. soda, dissolved in water
1 Tbsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation

Cream together butter, lard and 4 cups of brown sugar.
Pack, using your hands.
Add the black walnuts. Then add the eggs, flour, soda (dissolved in water), cream of tartar, vanilla and salt. Make the dough into long rolls.
Let stand overnight or refrigerate.
Cut in slices. Bake in moderate 400\u00b0 oven about 10 to 12 minutes. Makes about 12 dozen.
