Ingredients

1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1 c. molasses
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. lemon
Preparation

Cream shortening; add brown sugar.
Blend in egg and molasses. Beat until light and fluffy.
Sift the dry ingredients and gradually blend into creamed mixture.
(Dough should be soft, but not sticky.)
Add vanilla and lemon.
Shape into 1-inch balls and place on a greased baking sheet.
Do not flatten.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 12 to 15 minutes or until brown.
Sprinkle with granulated sugar and remove from baking sheet.
Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
