Layered Vegetable Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. shredded lettuce
    1 c. chopped green pepper
    1 c. onion, sliced in rings
    1 c. grated carrots
    1 c. diced celery
    2 c. well drained, cooked peas
    1 to 1 1/2 c. mayonnaise
    2 tsp. sugar
    1 c. grated American cheese
Preparation
    Layer vegetables as listed.
    Spread mayonnaise on top, sealing completely.
    Sprinkle sugar over mayonnaise.
    Sprinkle cheese over top.
    Do not stir.
    Chill overnight.
    Toss just before serving.
