Soft Sugar Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. flour
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. shortening
    1/4 c. butter or margarine
    1 c. granulated sugar
    1 egg yolk
    1/2 c. sour cream or buttermilk
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 egg white, beaten stiff
Preparation
    Mix flour, soda and salt.
    Cream shortening and butter. Gradually add sugar and cream well.
    Add egg yolk and vanilla and beat until light and fluffy.
    Add flour mixture, alternating with sour cream (or buttermilk), stirring until batter is smooth after each addition.
    Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
    Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet.
    Flatten with granulated sugar, if desired.
