    1/3 c. molasses or dark Karo syrup
    1/4 c. rum
    3 Tbsp. hot water
    1/4 tsp. baking soda
    2 eggs (optional)
    3/4 c. sifted flour
    1/2 to 3/4 c. pecans
    1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon and nutmeg
    1/4 tsp. ground ginger
    6 Tbsp. butter
    1/2 c. dark brown sugar
