Congo Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2/3 c. melted shortening
    1 (1 lb.) box brown sugar
    3 eggs
    2 3/4 c. sifted flour
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. chopped walnuts
    1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits (semi-sweet)
Preparation
    In a bowl combine melted shortening and brown sugar until well blended.
    Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
    Add sifted flour, baking powder and salt, blending well. Stir in nuts and chocolate bits.
    Spoon the batter (it will be thick) into a well-greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch oblong pan. Bake in a moderate oven (350\u00b0) until golden (about 40 to 45 minutes) or when a cake tester inserted comes away clean.
    Remove from oven and cool in pan before cutting into bars or squares.
