Scalloped Cheese Potatoes - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 lb. potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
    2 (10 3/4 oz. each) cans cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
    1/4 c. butter or margarine, divided
    2 c. (8 oz.) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
Preparation
    Options:
    You may add 1/2 cup chopped onion to the mixture and sprinkle bacon bits on top, if desired.
