Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    cucumbers, sliced
    1 c. plain salt
    water
    2 lb. powdered alum
    more water
    white vinegar
    3 c. sugar (for 3 days; total 9 c.)
    1 Tbsp. pickling spice
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers and pack in gallon jar.
    Mix plain salt in enough water to cover cucumbers.
    Let set 4 days.
    Wash 3 times. Mix powdered alum with enough water to cover cucumbers.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Wash 3 times again.
    Drain and put back into jar. Cover with white vinegar for 10 days.
    Pour off vinegar.
    Add 3 cups of sugar a day for 3 days.
    Add pickling spice.
    Can or leave in gallon jar.
