Ingredients

1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
4 Tbsp. prune juice
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. lard or Crisco shortening (no oil)
1 c. cooked prunes, chopped (pitted are best)
1 Tbsp. sour milk or buttermilk *
1 c. soft shortening
2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1/2 c. water, sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
Date Filling (recipe follows)
Preparation

Heat oven to 400\u00b0.
Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and eggs.
Stir in water and vanilla.
Sift together and stir in flour, salt, soda and cinnamon.
Drop with teaspoon on ungreased baking sheet.
Place 1/2 teaspoon Date Filling on dough; cover with another 1/2 teaspoon of dough.
Bake until lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes.
Makes 5 to 6 dozen.
