Divinity - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. Karo clear syrup
    2-1/2 c. sugar
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. water
    2 egg whites
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. chopped nuts, optional
Preparation
    In heavy pan over medium heat cook syrup, sugar, salt and water until sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly. Cook without stirring to firm ball stage (248\u00b0 on candy thermometer) or until small amount of syrup forms a firm ball when dropped in cold water. Just before syrup reaches 248\u00b0, in another bowl, beat egg whites with mixer until stiff. Slowly pour hot syrup into whites and continue beating with mixer until it holds its shape. Add vanilla, continue beating, it will be ready when mixture goes from shiny to a flat look. Add the nuts if desired. Immediately drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper. Use two spoons if necessary since the mixture is very hot. Makes 1-1/4 pounds.
