Date And Nut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. chopped dates
    2 c. boiling water
    2 tsp. baking soda
    2 c. white sugar
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    2 eggs (unbeaten)
    2 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. chopped black walnuts
    3 c. flour
Preparation
    Pour soda on chopped dates and pour boiling water over soda and dates; let cool about 20 minutes.
    Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, vanilla and salt.
    Mix water mixture of dates and flour, 1/3 at a time. Add sugar mixture and add nuts.
    Bake in angel food pan (greased and floured) at 350\u00b0 for 40 minutes.
    Top with cherries (optional).
