Chow Chow - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cabbage, chopped
    12 large onions, chopped
    12 green peppers, chopped
    12 red peppers, chopped
    1/2 gal. green tomatoes, chopped
    1/2 c. salt
    hot red pepper (optional)
    2 qt. vinegar
    5 c. sugar
    6 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 Tbsp. turmeric powder
    1 Tbsp. ginger
    2 Tbsp. mixed spices
Preparation
    Put the last 4 ingredients in a bag and tie.
    Combine sugar, vinegar and spices tied in a bag.
    Bring to a boil; simmer 5 minutes.
    Add vegetables.
    Bring back to a boil.
    Remove spice bag.
    Pack chow chow in hot jars.
    Seal at once.
