Virginia Chunk Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 peck small dill size cucumbers, cut in 1-inch chunks
    1 gal. cold water
    2 c. salt
    2 Tbsp. alum
Preparation
    Soak cucumbers in cold water and salt for 7 days.
    Stir every morning so as not to get a scum.
    On the eighth day, drain and rinse.
    Soak for 24 hours in 1 gallon cold water to 2 tablespoons alum.
    Drain well.
