Mother'S Date Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. white sugar
    1 c. brown sugar
    2 c. buttermilk
    1 c. shortening or margarine
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 eggs
    2 tsp. soda
    1 lb. dates, cut up
    1 c. chopped nuts
    5 c. flour
Preparation
    Cream shortening and sugar.
    Add eggs.
    Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with buttermilk.
    Add vanilla, dates and nuts. Grease and flour pans.
    Use 13 x 9-inch pan and an 8 x 8-inch. Bake in moderate oven about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
    When cold, cut into squares and roll in powdered sugar.
