Ingredients

1 stick butter
5 c. thinly sliced onion
6 1/2 c. water
5 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 c. red wine (optional)
Mozzarella cheese (optional)
French bread
Preparation

In a Dutch oven, melt butter.
Add onion and saute until golden brown.
Add water and bouillon; stir for first 2 minutes. Let come to a rolling boil.
Reduce heat.
Add pepper and wine (optional).
Let simmer for an hour.
