Sweet Story Cake - cooking recipe

2 1/4 c. sifted cake flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
5 1/2 tsp. tartar powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. Spry (Crisco)
3/4 c. milk
1/4 c. maraschino cherry juice
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract
4 egg whites (unbeaten)
18 maraschino cherries, well drained and very finely chopped
1/2 c. walnuts, finely chopped
Preparation

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into mixing bowl. Drop in Spry* (Crisco). Combine milk and maraschino juice. Add 3/4 cup of this liquid. Add flavoring extracts. Beat 200 strokes (2 minutes by hand or on mixer at low speed). Scrape bowl and spoon or beater. Add remaining liquid and egg whites and beat 200 strokes (2 minutes on mixer at low speed). Add cherries and nuts; blend. Bake in 2 deep 9-inch Spry* coated layer pans in moderate oven at 375\u00b0 for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool. Cut layers into heart shapes, using paper pattern. Spread with Pink Valentine's Day Frosting.
