Savory Beef - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 large onions, sliced
    3 Tbsp. shortening
    2 lb. beef, cubed
    3 Tbsp. flour
    1 tsp. salt
    2 Tbsp. vinegar
    1 Tbsp. ketchup
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1/4 tsp. ground cloves
    1/4 tsp. savory or thyme
    1 pt. brown stock or boiling water and 2 bouillon cubes
Preparation
    Brown
    onions
    slowly
    in
    fat.
    Add meat to onions and brown. Mix
    flour
    and dry seasonings and sprinkle over meat. Add stock, vinegar and ketchup.
    Cover tightly.
    Simmer until meat
    is tender, 1 1/2 hours approximately.
    Serve in ring of mashed potatoes or rice.
