Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers
    8 small onions
    2 green peppers
    1/2 c. salt
    1 heaping tsp. alum
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    2 Tbsp. white mustard seed
    1 tsp. celery seed
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers, but not too thin.
    Cut peppers and onions in small pieces.
    Sprinkle the vegetables with the 1/2 cup salt and use a few lumps of ice.
    Let this stand for 3 hours, then drain off this water.
    Make a pickling syrup using alum, sugar, turmeric, mustard seed, celery seed and vinegar.
    Pour all this in a kettle and stir often, using a wooden spoon.
    Let this come to a boil, but do not boil.
    Put in jars and seal.
