Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 qt. small cucumbers, sliced thin
    1 qt. small onions, sliced thin
    1/2 c. salt water
    1 1/2 qt. vinegar
    1 tsp. turmeric
    1/4 lb. white mustard seed
    6 c. sugar
Preparation
    Let cucumbers and onions stand in salt water overnight.
    (Use a large enamel pan and just cover cucumbers and onions with water.) Make a syrup of vinegar, turmeric, mustard seed and sugar.
    Bring to a boil.
    Add cucumbers and onions which have been removed from the salt water and drained completely dry.
    Cook on medium heat. Leave in just long enough for it to simmer and just start to bubble.
    Remove from fire and put in sterilized jars.
    When jars are filled, add 1/4 teaspoon of powdered alum to each quart; seal.
