Date And Walnut Roll - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. chopped dates
    60 grams butter
    1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
    3/4 c. water
    1/2 tsp. bicarb of soda
    1 egg, lightly beaten
    1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
    1 c. self-rising flour or 1 c. flour plus 2 tsp. baking powder
Preparation
    Combine dates, butter, sugar and water in a pan and stir constantly over heat without boiling until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil and remove from the heat.
    Transfer mixture to a large bowl to cool to room temperature.
    Grease 2 nut roll tins. Stir soda, egg and nuts into date mixture, then sifted flour. Spoon mixture evenly into prepared tins.
    Bake in moderate oven at 180\u00b0C for about an hour.
    Stand rolls in tins for 10 minutes with lids on.
    Remove lids, turn on wire rack to cool.
    When cool, serve buttered.
