White Cake - cooking recipe

2 1/2 c. sifted flour
3 3/4 tsp. baking powder or 2 1/2 double-action
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/3 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Preparation

Sift flour once; measure.
Add baking powder and salt and sift together three times.
Cream shortening thoroughly.
Add sifted flour gradually, keeping mixture light and fluffy.
Add dry ingredients alternately with milk and flavoring, beating well after each addition.
Fold in egg whites, beaten stiff, but not dry.
Bake in greased, lined pans in moderate oven (time about 30 minutes).
