Potato Casserole - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 lb. thawed (frozen) hash browns
    1/2 c. butter
    1 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1/2 c. onion (optional)
    1 can cream of celery or mushroom soup
    1 pt. (use only 12 oz.) sour cream
    2 c. grated cheese
    1/4 c. butter
    2 c. crushed cornflakes or potato chips (I like cornflakes best)
Preparation
    Combine thawed potatoes and 1/2 cup butter.
    Season with salt and pepper.
    Add the rest of the ingredients, except topping. Bake in buttered pan (9 x 13-inch).
    Make topping; cover top of potatoes with mix.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 45 minutes.
    Remove 1 hour before baking, if stored in refrigerator.
    Can be made well ahead.
