Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe
Ingredients

16 lb. cucumbers
1 box alum
10 lb. sugar
1 gal. vinegar
1 small box pickling spice
enough salt in water to float an egg
Preparation

Mix salt and water in crock about 1/2 full.
Put whole cucumbers in water and let set 14 days.
Remove and slice.
Let set overnight in water and alum.
Rinse and cover well with vinegar for 6 hours.
Pour off vinegar and discard.
Alternate layers of cucumbers, sugar and spice.
Tie up in clean white cloth, put in center of pickles.
Syrup will rise over pickles. Cover pickles.
They do not have to be sealed or refrigerated.
