Date Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    14 1/2 oz. chopped dates
    1/2 c. sugar
    3/4 c. light corn syrup
    1/2 c. orange juice
    2 tsp. grated orange peel
    1 1/2 tsp. salt, divided
    2 1/2 c. sifted flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. butter
    1 c. brown sugar
    1/2 c. water
    2 1/2 c. quick cooking oats
    1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tsp. water
Preparation
    Combine first 5 ingredients with 1/4 teaspoon salt.
    Cook over low heat until thick.
    Cool.
    In large bowl, sift flour, soda and remaining salt.
    Add butter, brown sugar and water, stirring vigorously.
    Add oats by hand.
