Ingredients

3 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. anise flavoring
3 eggs
1 c. thinly sliced blanched almonds (optional)
Preparation

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
In large bowl, cream butter, sugar and anise.
Beat in eggs, one at a time.
Add flour mixture and almonds.
Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.
Divide dough in half.
Shape each half into a roll about 1 1/2-inches in diameter.
Place on lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake at 350\u00b0 until firm to the touch (30 to 35 minutes).
Remove and cool slightly.
While still warm, cut rolls into crosswise slices, 1/2-inch thick.
Return to oven and bake until lightly toasted.
Turn to other side and toast lightly.
Cool completely.
Store in a tightly covered tin.
