Pear Preserves - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 qt. pears, sliced
    2 c. water or juice
    4 1/2 c. sugar
    6 slices lemon (if desired)
Preparation
    Boil juice and sugar 5 minutes.
    Add fruit to partly cooled syrup.
    Bring gently to boil.
    Add lemon.
    Boil rapidly until clear and tender.
    Let cool rapidly.
    Let stand in syrup to plump.
