Connecticut Beef Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    2 lb. stew meat, in 1-inch cubes
    2 large onions, sliced
    1 c. water
    2 large potatoes, pared and thinly sliced
    1 can cream of mushroom soup
    1 c. sour cream
    1 1/4 c. milk
    1 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
    1 1/4 c. Wheaties cereal, crushed
Preparation
    Melt shortening; cook meat and onions until meat is brown and onions tender.
    Add water, boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 50 minutes.
