Ingredients

1 c. shortening
3 c. sugar
2 c. buttermilk
4 c. sifted flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Preparation

Cream shortening and sugar.
Add a little buttermilk and beat until fluffy.
Sift all dry ingredients and add with the rest of the buttermilk and vanilla.
Fold in the beaten egg whites.
Pour into three 9-inch pans, greased and floured.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 35 to 40 minutes.
