Ingredients

1 lb. dates, cut up
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. chopped nuts
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs, well beaten
Preparation

Cook dates, water, 1/2 cup sugar and nuts until thick.
Cool. Sift flour, soda and salt.
Cream shortening and blend in 1/2 cup sugar and brown sugar.
Add eggs and beat.
Stir in vanilla and flour mixture.
Mix until dough is smooth.
Divide dough into 2 equal parts.
Roll out 1/4 inch thick.
Spread with 1/2 of date mix.
Roll up like a jelly roll.
Chill and cut in 1/4-inch slices.
Do the same with other half.
Bake at 400\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes.
