Sweet Icicle Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. salt
    2 qt. water
    20 cucumbers (4 to 6 inches long)
    2 tsp. powdered alum
    1 1/2 Tbsp. mixed pickling spices
    5 c. sugar
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Cut cucumbers in quarters lengthwise; put in stone jar or stainless steel container.
    Add salt to water and bring to a boil. Pour over cucumbers.
    Cover with plate to keep cucumbers under brine.
    Let stand for 1 week in cool place.
    Drain and rinse cucumbers thoroughly.
    Cover with boiling water and let stand 24 hours.
    Drain and add alum to cucumbers; cover with boiling water. Let stand 24 hours; drain.
