Ingredients

1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. butter flavoring
1 (1 oz.) bottle red food coloring
3 Tbsp. cocoa
2 1/2 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 Tbsp. vinegar
Preparation

Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating vigorously after each addition.
Add flavorings.
Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring and blend in.
Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately with buttermilk.
Add vinegar with last half of buttermilk.
Beat only until smooth.
Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch or 9-inch cake pans for 20 to 25 minutes at 350\u00b0 or until cake tester comes out clean.
Cool 10 minutes and remove from pans.
When cool, frost with Red Velvet Cake Icing.
