Oneida Or Lime Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 lb. cucumbers
    2 gal. water
    2 c. lime
    2 qt. vinegar
    4 1/2 lb. sugar
    1 Tbsp. salt
    1 tsp. celery seed
    1 tsp. whole cloves
    1 tsp. mixed spices
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers lengthwise, then scoop seeds out with spoon. Cut in 1/2-inch thick slices.
    Cover with 2 gallons water in which 2 cups lime has been dissolved.
    Cover; let stand 24 hours.
    Drain and rinse at least 3 times in cold water.
    Cover with ice water and let stand 3 hours.
    Drain well and dry with towel.
    Make a syrup of vinegar, sugar, salt and spices.
    Stir well and heat. Pour syrup over cukes and let stand overnight.
    The next morning, boil for about 35 minutes or until transparent.
    Put in sterilized jars and seal.
    Save leftover syrup.
    Cover and refrigerate until next making.
