Ingredients

1/4 c. shortening
1 c. light brown sugar, packed
1 egg
3/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation

Heat oven to 350\u00b0.
Grease an 8-inch square pan.
In saucepan, melt over low heat shortening; take from heat and stir in brown sugar.
Set aside to cool.
Into cooled sugar and shortening, stir egg; add and blend well flour, baking powder and salt.
Stir in vanilla and nuts.
Spread in pan.
Bake 25 minutes, only until a toothpick stuck in center comes out clean.
Do not overbake!
Cool in pan and cut into squares.
Makes 16 (2-inch) squares.
