Date And Chocolate Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 c. boiling water
    2/3 c. shortening
    1 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 eggs
    1 3/4 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
    1 c. chopped walnuts
Preparation
    Combine dates and boiling water.
    Cool to room temperature. Mix together shortening and sugar, creaming until fluffy.
    Blend in vanilla and eggs, adding one egg at a time, beating well after each addition.
    Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
    Add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating well after each addition.
    Spread batter in greased 13 x 9-inch pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnuts on top of batter.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 40 to 45 minutes.
    Cool in pan.
    Cut in squares and may be topped with whipped cream.
