Strawberry Meringue Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3/4 c. shortening
    1/3 c. sugar
    2 egg yolks
    1 1/2 c. sifted flour
    1 c. strawberry preserves
    2 egg whites
    1/2 c. sugar
    1 c. walnuts, chopped
Preparation
    Set oven at 350\u00b0.
    Beat together shortening, sugar and egg yolks.
    Add flour; stir until blended.
    Spread mixture into bottom of ungreased 13 x 9-inch pan.
    Bake for 12 minutes.
    Remove from oven.
    Spread evenly with preserves.
    Beat egg whites; beat in sugar gradually.
    Fold in nutmeats.
    Spread meringue carefully over preserves.
    Bake for 25 minutes.
    Cool.
    Cut into bars. Makes 18 bars.
