Cabbage Patch Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
1 to 2 lb. hamburger meat
    1 medium onion, chopped
    1 bell pepper, chopped
    1/2 c. celery, chopped
    1 can tomatoes, mashed
1 can kidney beans with liquid
1 can chili beans with liquid or 1 can pork and beans plus 1 tsp. chili powder
    salt and pepper to taste
    2 to 3 c. shredded cabbage
Preparation
Put beef, onion, bell pepper and celery in a Dutch oven; cover and steam over medium heat until the meat turns white.
Stir occasionally, breaking meat up with a fork.
The meat may be mashed fine or left in bite-size chunks, as desired.
(To reduce the fat content, drain the meat mixture at this point.)
Add tomatoes, beans, salt and pepper.
    Bring to a boil.
Add cabbage, pushing cabbage under the liquid.
Cover and simmer about 20 minutes.
    Adjust seasoning.
This freezes well and gets better every time it is warmed over.
