Oven Beef Stew - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 Tbsp. flour
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 lb. beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    2 (10 1/2 oz.) cans tomato soup
    1 1/2 c. chopped onion
    1/2 tsp. dried basil, crushed
    4 medium potatoes, pared and cubed
    4 medium carrots, sliced 1-inch thick
    1/2 c. dry red wine or water
Preparation
    Combine flour, salt and dash of pepper; coat meat cubes in seasoned flour.
    Brown in hot shortening in Dutch oven; add soup, 2 1/2 cups
    water,
    onion,
    basil, potatoes and carrots. Cover and bake in 350\u00b0
    oven for three hours.
    One hour before cooking time is up, add 1/2
    cup
    of red wine or water.
    Stir; then return to oven.
