Refried Beans - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 pound dried pinto or kidney beans
    6 c. water
    1 onion, chopped
    1/2 c. unsalted butter
    2 Tbsp chili powder
    salt to taste
Preparation
    Mix well, continue cooking, stirring frequently until beans are thickened and butter is absorbed. Serve at once or refrigerate for later use. (I put 1 to 2 c. in freezer containers and freeze for later use.) I also find the crock pot works well to put beans in after they are mashed. Cook on low for the remainder of time.
