Ingredients

3 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. Crisco
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
red food coloring
Preparation

Preheat oven to 350\u00b0.
Sift flour with sugar, soda and salt. Mix in shortening and knead with both hands for 8 to 10 minutes. Combine egg and almond extract.
Stir into flour mixture.
Mix well.
Shape into balls the size of walnuts.
Place on baking sheets and make depression on top with the thumb.
Dip blunt end of chopstick in red food coloring and press into top of each cookie.
Bake 15 to 18 minutes.
