Date And Nut Bread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. dates, cut up
    2 c. chopped nuts
    2 c. boiling water
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 1/2 c. brown sugar
    4 c. cake flour
    1 tsp. salt
    2 eggs
    2 level tsp. baking soda
Preparation
    Pour boiling water over nuts and dates, let stand.
    Mix with mixer shortening and sugar, break in eggs.
    Mix well.
    Sift flour and salt together.
    Add soda to nuts and dates mixture.
    (Do not do earlier or dates will turn red.)
    Mix by hand.
    Stir in flour and fruit mixture, alternately.
    Gently add to the shortening mixture.
    Then add 2/3 cup water and mix gently, beat well.
    Makes 4 small pans.
    Oil and flour pans.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 45 minutes.
