Strawberry Meringue Pie - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    baked 9-inch pie shell
    1/4 c. water
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
    2 unbeaten egg whites
Preparation
    Place ingredients in double boiler and beat.
    Place container over rapidly boiling water.
    Beat steadily with wire whisk or rotary beater until the meringue will hold a peak (6 to 8 minutes).
    Remove the container from heat and continue to beat for 3 minutes.
    Fill the pie shell with 2 to 3 cups hulled strawberries or other tart fruit.
    Cover with meringue.
    Swirl on top for a professional effect.
    Place pie under broiler to brown top lightly, if desired.
    When cool, chill pie.
