My Best Gingerbread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter or other shortening
    1/2 c. granulated sugar
    1 1/2 c. flour, sifted
    1 1/2 tsp. soda
    1 c. water
    1 egg, beaten
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. ginger
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. Br'er Rabbit molasses
Preparation
    Cream shortening and sugar, add beaten egg.
    Measure and sift dry ingredients.
    Mix molasses with hot water, add dry ingredients alternately with liquid, a little at a time;
    beat after each addition.
    Bake in a paper-lined pan (9 x 9 x 2) in 350\u00b0 oven for 45 minutes.
    Makes 15 squares.
