Grandma'S Chunk Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    5 to 6 qt. cucumbers (about 25 five-inch)
    8 c. sugar
    1 qt. cider vinegar
    2 Tbsp. salt (canning)
    mixed pickle spices (in a bag, about 1/2 can)
    1 tsp. green food coloring
    pinch of alum (in each jar)
Preparation
    Clean cucumbers.
    Put in a large bowl.
    Pour boiling water on whole cucumbers for 4 mornings.
    Fifth morning, cut pickles into 1/2 to 3/4-inch chunks, discarding ends.
    Make syrup with sugar, vinegar, salt and spices.
    Pour hot syrup over cucumbers.
    Reheat syrup on mornings 6 and 7.
    On morning 8, simmer syrup for 5 minutes; add food coloring and can.
